Musings on the Week
Return to Common Sense
January 19, 2013
Politics – “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.” Alexis de Tocqueville.
Politics – Obama is a master at the use of strawman arguments, based on a liberal Bizarro-world perception with hyperbolic stereotyping, to justify solutions to problems that don’t exist.
Politics – Obama’s first term Cabinet was high on diversity with ideologue under-achievers, but now he has abandoned symbolic diversity for a second set of partisan sycophants.
Politics – Democrat elites are meeting at the progressive “Democracy Initiative” behind the scenes to guarantee donor’s administration access and policy making input for the 2nd term.
Politics – The TEA Party brand stands for Taxed Enough Already, limited government, fiscal responsibility, a return to constitutional governance, individual liberty and free markets.
Politics – I expect the TEA Party movement to re-emerge as the new taxes and regulations hit, and the “second half” of our 2008 recession hits full force (as if it ever really stopped).
Media – The MSM continues to hemorrhage readers, with political ads in the 2012 election propping them up, but I expect the MSM to begin failing, with Newsweek the first to go.
Politics – “The first requisite of a good citizen in this republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight.” Theodore Roosevelt.
Budget – Republicans begin budgets with how much money is available and then focus on priorities, while Democrats start with how much they want and then focus on raising revenue.
Deficit – Deficits will occur automatically with spending exceeding revenues, because Continuing Resolutions are based on baseline budgets with automatic annual increases.
Debt – The President will use the Inaugural Address and State of the Union speech to blame Republicans for not capitulating on the debt ceiling, yet can envision no compromise ideas.
Debt – When a government runs out of money it must prioritize how it spends what money it has, and only a conscious decision not to pay debt service costs would cause a default.
Debt – There is no doubt that the debt ceiling discussions will fester until the last day and will require some “grand bargain” that will just postpone addressing the underlying problems.
Jobs – Obama’s jobs focus has claimed 24 million martyrs: 12 million unemployed, 3.6 million who dropped out of the work force, and 8 million who can only find part-time work.
Automobiles – The Obama administration has wasted over $5 billion on electric vehicles that are technologically not ready for market, no infrastructure, and the public does not want.
Education – Taxpayers have spent over $180 billion on Head Start, but this Great Society relic has failed to improve academic outcomes for the children it was designed to help.
Gun Control – Studies find that 2.5 million Americans each year use guns for self-defense and that 400,000 of them say they would have been killed if they hadn’t been armed.
Gun Control – Obama’s 23 gun control measures are a laundry list of Progressive desire, symbolic gestures at best, and ineffective at worst with little chance of passing in Congress.
Gun Control – The question is what problem is being fixed: school massacres, criminal use of guns, gun violence, disarming law-abiding citizens, or federal confiscation of all weapons.
Environment – Al Gore’s declaration of “mission accomplished” on climate change is as believable as his declaration of global warming based on bogus data and faux experts.
Environment – A carbon tax is just another regressive tax, costing $75 billion a year, hurting the poor, disadvantaging American manufacturers, and with no effect on global change.
Abortion – Planned Parenthood received more than $542 million from the government last year, which means an astounding 45% of its revenue came from the American taxpayer.
Debt – I expect that the country’s credit rating will again be downgraded after Congress debt ceiling discussions again fail to demonstrate firm commitments to controlling spending.
Deficit – I expect one or more states to declare bankruptcy and seek assistance to recover from the bad economic decisions of the past under federal judicial protection.
Housing – I expect that it will take four or more years at the current rate for the backlog of foreclosures to finally clear, before we see any signs of life of a robust housing recovery.
Politics – “Overcoming the Cold War required courage from the people of Central and Eastern Europe and what was then the German Democratic Republic, but it also required the steadfastness of Western partner over many decades when many had long lost hope of integration of the two Germanys and Europe.” Angela Merkel.
Defense – Every suicide is a tragedy, but contrary to the media narrative of an epidemic of military suicides, when they are 35% below that of the comparable civilian population.
Communism – Over a century ago, Senator McCarthy was vilified by trying to warn us that our government was being infiltrated by Communists, but has since been proven correct.
GWOT – The Islamo-fascists are actively promoting the Balkanization of America through our open borders and lax immigration enforcement to soften us up and ultimately destroy us.
GWOT – Obama is making the classic liberal mistake of equating ending a war with winning a war, when he never defined clear achievable goals and then under-achieved even them.
Afghanistan – The President claimed credit for devastating blows to al Qaeda and the Taliban, but is now negotiating with the Taliban for a swift painless troop withdrawal.
Libya – Will we ever learn who denied requests for additional security, who told the military to stand down and not help, and who created and nurtured the false media narrative?
Chile – Chile is the superstar of Latin America, maintaining a modest-sized government with little debt and high growth, giving the country the highest per capita income in the region.
Israel – I expect that Israel will be attacked by Hamas and the IDF will retaliate by invading and then re-annexing Gaza based on defensible borders and 1920 San Remo Conference.
Israel – I expect that Israel will suffer a nuclear attack from Islamist extremists, and Obama will talk a lot, but stand aside and refuse to help defend this longtime ally.
Asia – I expect that North Korea will attack South Korea and attempt to reunite Korea, and Obama will be “unable” to support our troops and will negotiate for a stalemate.
