Musings on the Week
Return to Common Sense
April 13, 2013
Economy – “My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support your police.” Margaret Thatcher.
Politics – The TEA Party leadership has notified the Republican National Committee that they must “lead or get out of the way”, because currently they are disconnected from their base.
Politics – Obama has established another “new normal” behavior with his budget delivered 65 days after its deadline, setting the expectation that deadlines don’t apply to him.
Politics – Behind every liberal politician lurks a totalitarian autocrat yearning to impose their Ruling Elite ideas on the compliant Country Class, ignoring any unintended consequences.
Politics – Hillary Clinton earned nicknames: as First Lady she was “Dragon Lady,” as Senator she was a “Carping Carpetbagger,” and as Secretary of State she was a “Teflon Diplomat.”
Politics – Florida Democrats coordinated with national party organizations and consultants in early 2012 to gerrymander Congressional districts despite a state ban on such activities.
Media – The MSM downfall has already begun, but I expect this avalanche to continue more layoffs at the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the TV Network News departments.
Economy – “The larger the slice taken by government, the smaller the cake available for everyone.” Margaret Thatcher.
Economy – Japan is doubling its purchases of government bonds trying to spend its way to prosperity despite enormous public debt (220% of GDP) and years of stagnation.
Budget – Obama submitted a budget, two months late that contains the same tiresome mix of more government, increased spending and increased taxes and will be DOA.
Jobs – The only reason we haven’t had a revolt during the Obama Recession is the impact is hidden because the 47 million food stamps recipients don’t line up like the Great Depression.
Jobs – The unprecedented 2.5 percentage decline in the labor force participation rate under Obama amounts to 6.2 million Americans being pushed out of the labor force!
Social Security – The federal Disability Trust Fund ran a record $31.2 billion deficit in 2012, every year under Obama, when for fifteen straight years the Trust Fund ran a surplus.
Welfare – The last time the question was asked in 1985, 64% agreed that young poor women “often” have children to get additional welfare benefits, while 44% of non-poor said no.
Environment – Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2012 were the lowest since 1994, making the U.S. the only nation in the world who met the Kyoto emissions reduction target.
Environment – Sun-caused Climate Change was detected on the planets Mars and Pluto and Triton, a moon of Neptune, and caused increased storm activity on Jupiter and Saturn.
Elections – Considering the Democrat sordid history in election fraud, Obama establishing a “Presidential Commission of Election Administration” is like the fox guarding the chickens!
Marriage – Canada has had same-sex marriage for a decade and only one third of 1% of Canadian nuptials were same-sex and many of those were Americans crossing the border.
Family – Liberal programs destroyed families and condemned children to single parent households, so now liberals want to begin indoctrination earlier in government day-care.
Abortion – Planned Parenthood is defending infanticide on babies that survive an abortion, thus expanding their role into fourth trimester terminations decided by mother and doctor.
Crime – If marijuana is such a good pain reliever, why hasn’t the pharmaceutical industry extracted the active chemical and made THC available as a prescription medication?
Civil Rights – AG Eric Holder spends an inordinate amount of time on racial issues and meeting with race-centered organizations, giving appearance of racial bias at the DOJ.
Religion – President Obama was able to host an Iftar dinner celebrating Ramadan in the White House, but is unable to hold a Jewish History Month, because of sequestration.
Gun Control – The President’s campaign blitz accomplished one thing: The NRA boosted its membership from 4 million to 5 million, and raised a huge amount in fundraising.
Welfare – In 2012, welfare paid better than a minimum wage job in 40 states, explaining why few work for minimum wage even though it can lead to a better job and higher wages.
Welfare – Twenty percent of all recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) have been on the program for more than five years – more a hand-out than a hand-up.
Deficit – I expect one or more states to declare bankruptcy and seek assistance to recover from the bad economic decisions of the past under federal judicial protection.
Housing – I expect that it will take four or more years at the current rate for the backlog of foreclosures to finally clear, before we see any signs of life of a robust housing recovery.
Economy – “They’ve got the Socialist disease – they’ve run out of other people’s money.” Margaret Thatcher.
Foreign Policy – Obama has a Grand Strategy: Grand Speech (vacuous words), then Grand Gesture (clumsy bluff), then Capitulation (quick exit), followed by Grand Spin (shift blame).
Foreign Policy – John Kerry is Obama’s second clueless, unqualified Secretary of State, who travels the world and is surprised when he is not welcomed by other nations.
Europe – Italy and France now has a "negative" bond rating by all three of the major rating services; and Belgium, Holland, and Austria each have two negative ratings.
Syria – Al-Qaeda in Iraq has united with a Syrian jihadist group to form the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, becoming one of the most powerful groups fighting President Assad.
Libya – Will we ever learn who denied requests for additional security, who told the military to stand down and not help, and who created and nurtured the false media narrative?
Israel – I expect that Israel will be attacked by Hamas and the IDF will retaliate by invading and then re-annexing Gaza based on defensible borders and 1920 San Remo Conference.
Israel – I expect that Israel will suffer a nuclear attack from Islamist extremists, and Obama will talk a lot, but stand aside and refuse to help defend this longtime ally.
Asia – I expect that North Korea will attack South Korea and attempt to reunite Korea, and Obama will be “unable” to support our troops and will negotiate for a stalemate.
