Musings on the Week
November 2, 2013
Socialism – “Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” Alexis de Tocqueville.
Politics – Ted Cruz is being attacked by both Democrats and Republican establishment, but he must remember that Ronald Reagan was ridiculed before being elected President.
Politics – Charlie Crist is a perfect example of a RINO Republican who lost in the Florida Republican primary, then ran as an Independent, and has since joined the Democrat Party.
Politics – Now that we know who leaked the IRS confidential donor lists to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), what will it take to issue felony indictments and arrests?
Politics – Barack Obama always has good intentions, but no clue on how to actually implement anything, so he has abandoned ObamaCare to return to the campaign trail.
Politics – This week’s distractions from Obama’s disastrous policies are: beating the broken drum on immigration amnesty and more lame excuses for the ObamaCare rollout failures.
Politics – Hillary Clinton was derelict in her duty in Benghazi and has been covering-up her role ever since, first lying about warnings, then blaming a video, then hiding from the media.
Media – Once outside the Georgetown/Manhattan/ Hollywood beltway, America knows that ObamaCare is unworkable and must be first defunded, then eventually repealed.
Media – As new technologies emerge, I expect Twitter will go the way of telephone party
lines doomed by personal privacy issues and a lack of any viable business case.
Socialism – “” Thomas Sowell.
Finance – The Federal Reserve Quantitative Easing stimulus programs total $1.5 trillion for QE1, $600 billion for QE2, and QE3 could total $1.6 trillion and once ended, interest rates will climb.
Deficit – The Federal Reserve kept inflation artificially low and slowed economic growth, so now they want to increase inflation, but ignore the impact of debt service on the deficit.
Deficit – Obama has presided over five of the six largest annual budget deficits the United States has ever run with the last one the only one under $1 trillion, due to sequestration .
Jobs – The BLS publishes an employment report monthly, seasonally adjusted then frequently corrected in later revisions, but is misleading and obfuscates the overall jobs picture.
Healthcare – The problem is that all the serial
assurances about ObamaCare have been proven untrue: everyone will
not be covered, many will lose their coverage and their doctors, care will be
curtailed, premiums and deductibles will go up, new taxes will be needed, national
deficit will increase, and businesses will be less, not more, competitive.
Healthcare – ObamaCare must be killed ASAP, because as Ronald Reagan once said “Government programs, once launched, never disappear… the nearest thing to eternal life.”
Healthcare – The Medicaid expansion within ObamaCare seems to be working fine in the states that opted for the expansion, but the private insurance side seems to be lagging.
Healthcare – ObamaCare is a Democrat “Trojan Horse” fatally flawed and designed to fail for replacement by a “more efficient” single-payer federally controlled healthcare system.
Energy – The ethanol additive gets worse fuel economy than gasoline or diesel, drives up food prices, damages car engines, and has unintended environmental consequences.
Immigration – Marco Rubio now believes that individual piecemeal immigration bills is the best way to incrementally reform immigration policy with controversial amnesty last.
Immigration – A Harris poll found that 81% of native-born Americans believe schools should teach to be proud of being American, compared to only 50% of naturalized U.S. citizens.
Housing – The U.S. Treasury has booked a $9.7 billion loss on its $49.5 billion bailout of General Motors on the sale of nearly all of its shares that it received as part of the bailout.
Marriage – Marriage is a union between a man and a woman creating a lifetime relationship for husband, wife, and children that is a religious institution sanctified in law and practice.
Justice – Article Six of the Constitution establishes the laws of the United States as the supreme law of the land, and forbids surrendering that authority to any international body.
Debt – I expect that the country’s credit rating will be downgraded again when debt ceiling negotiations fail to cut spending enough to halt deficit spending.
Deficit – I expect one or more states to declare bankruptcy and seek assistance to recover from the bad economic decisions of the past under federal judicial protection.
Housing – I expect that it will take four or more years at the current rate for the backlog of foreclosures to finally clear, before we see any signs of life of a robust housing recovery.
Socialism – “Socialism is the religion people get when they lose their religion.” Richard John Neuhaus.
United Nations – Saudi Arabia declined a seat on the Security Council based on past poor performance, so maybe the U.S. should de-commit funds based on past poor performance.
Libya – Will the Congressional investigations ever get around to asking who gave the order to “stand down” and not attempt any rescue efforts of our people under attack in Benghazi?
Israel – I expect that Israel will be attacked by Hamas and the IDF will retaliate by invading and then re-annexing Gaza based on defensible borders and 1920 San Remo Conference.
Israel – I expect that Israel will suffer a nuclear attack from Islamist extremists, and Obama will talk a lot, but stand aside and refuse to help defend this longtime ally.
Asia – I expect that North Korea will attack South Korea and attempt to reunite Korea, and Obama will be “unable” to support our troops and will negotiate for a stalemate.
