Musings on the Week

November 30, 2013

Low Information Voters – A nation under a well regulated government, should permit none to remain uninstructed. It is monarchical and aristocratical government only that requires ignorance for its support. Thomas Paine.

Politics Conservatives accept and tolerate alternative ideas and behaviors, while liberals try to restrict anyone from having or displaying any alternative ideas or behaviors.

Politics – Obama is equally adept at deceiving people into accepting his initial policies as conning them into accepting the lowering of expectations for his failed policies.

Politics Obama’s five most important polling questions (job approval, honesty, handling of the economy, strong leadership, and personal approval) have all dropped significantly.

Politics – One of Obama’s political assets has been his ability to excite young people, but Millennials have soured on Obama so much that their opinion mirrors the American public’s.

Politics – This week’s distractions from the stagnant economy and ObamaCare:  income inequality while jobs disappear and expanded Chinese Air Defense Identification Zone.

Politics – The nation’s view of Hillary Clinton has cratered with unfavorable opinions exceeding favorable opinions, colored by the horrific Benghazi assassination on her watch.

Media – CNN has followed the failed transformation of network news from unbiased news source, to an entertainment contributor, and now to a leftist political propaganda wing.

Media – As new technologies emerge, I expect Twitter will go the way of telephone party

lines doomed by personal privacy issues and a lack of any viable business case.

Taxation – If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute. Thomas Paine.

Economy – The economy continued to limp along as the labor force continues to shrink, and has still not recovered back to the conditions that Obama faced when he was first elected.

Underemployment Rate (U6)

Jobs – The labor force is 1.5 million jobs short of where it was in December 2007, when the recession began, barely creating enough jobs to keep pace with population growth.

Debt – Congress may be close to reaching another short term budget deal that does not begin to scale down our bloated government or cut our debt, just to buy more time.

Debt – In October 2012, President Obama refused to “let Detroit go bankrupt,” but now his keen economic understanding saved Detroit as surely as he will save ObamaCare.

Energy – Obama is tipping the scales for renewable energy with EPA carbon regulations choking off coal energy and DOE inaction on waste disposal choking off nuclear energy.

Healthcare The Obama administration promised ObamaCare would be 100% operational on October 1st, but now they promise it will be “in the zone of 80%” on December 1st.

Healthcare ObamaCare shows liberal hypocrisy when it is defended as the law of the land which can’t be changed, but is quickly changed when it fails to operate as designed.

Healthcare – In the free market, a product such as defective, destructive, dangerous, and incomplete as ObamaCare would have been withdrawn from market within the first weeks.

Healthcare – Obama would like you to believe that ObamaCare delivers better healthcare than run by insurance companies, but ignores the best alternative of patient-centered care.

Environment – Carbon Tax” is a purely a government revenue generator to fund additional spending and further redistribution of wealth, with no measurable environmental benefit.

Education – Common Core is focused on learning strategies and approaches, not factual content outcomes, and is inculcated with leftist propaganda and partisan interpretations.

Gun Control – Since 1994, while gun ownership has nearly doubled to 310 million, “firearm-related murder and non-negligent homicide” rate has more than halved to 3.2 per 100,000.

Homeland Security – The Government Accountability Office proposes chopping the Transportation Security Administrations’ with no evidence that it could stop airline terrorists.

Welfare Food stamps are designed to be a temporary safety net program, not a form of dependency, but 56% of SNAP households are on the program five years or longer.
Debt – I expect that the country’s credit rating will be downgraded again when debt ceiling negotiations fail to cut spending enough to halt deficit spending.

Deficit – I expect one or more states to declare bankruptcy and seek assistance to recover from the bad economic decisions of the past under federal judicial protection.

Housing – I expect that it will take four or more years at the current rate for the backlog of foreclosures to finally clear, before we see any signs of life of a robust housing recovery.

ExceptionalismThe cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Thomas Paine.

GWOT – Muslim rape or grooming gangs are kidnapping, raping and selling underage girls in Europe and this continent, justifying their actions as religiously mandated in Islamic doctrine.

Asia – Obama’s “pivot to Asia” is toothless as Joe Biden offers appeasement to territory grabbing China, while abandoning long term Japanese mutual defense obligations.

Israel I expect that Israel will be attacked by Hamas and the IDF will retaliate by invading and then re-annexing Gaza based on defensible borders and 1920 San Remo Conference.

Israel – I expect that Israel will suffer a nuclear attack from Islamist extremists, and Obama will talk a lot, but stand aside and refuse to help defend this longtime ally.

Asia – I expect that North Korea will attack South Korea and attempt to reunite Korea, and Obama will be “unable” to support our troops and will negotiate for a stalemate.
